Garbage

As a condo owner it can be difficult at times to know where or who to call to pick up different types of Garbage.  We ask that no large items or electronics be disposed of in the dumpsters.  The city will not pick up the bins if they are overflowing or if the access to the bins is blocked by random items.

Furniture and mattresses: please consider drop off centers such as Salvation Army, Value Village or Goodwill.  If you are unable to attend a drop off center there are several places that will pick up and drop off large over sized items at the garbage dump.  A small fee will apply.  For example, 1-800-GOT-JUNK.

Appliances (working or not):  If you have any items you can call 204-663-9988.  They have a drop off center or will pick up for free.  Also if you want to make a few bucks consider dropping off your old appliance at a scrap metal depot.  Check with them first, however, most take old appliances just for the scrap metal.

Electronic Waste:  Items such as old VCR’s, wiring/cables, computers, monitors, old cell phones etc.  Mother Earth Recycling will accept computers, TVs, monitors, stereos, etc @ 204-942-7900.  Old cell phones can be dropped off at most cell phone retail outlets.  If you have a working computer, consider donating it to a school.  There are several programs out there that will accept good condition computers that meet their minimum requirements.  For example, Computers for schools @ 204-988-1796.

Light Bulbs & Batteries:  These items can be dropped at your local home hardware store.  Rona, Home Depot and Ikea all have drop bins

Hazardous Wastes:  Items such as old paint or partially used paint cans, spray paints, tires,  etc. should never be put in the waste bins.  Your local hardware store will have a program where these items  can be dropped off.  Tires on the other hand can be taken to Road Auto Centre @ 36 St Mary’s 204-237-8838.

Recycling

We encourage everyone to use these bins for their recycling needs.  Please ensure all boxes are broken down and any containers are flattened.  This will allow more material to fit in the containers.  The City of Winnipeg has informed the Board if these containers are over flowing they will not be picked up.  We are working on a solution to provide more containers to meet our communities recycling needs.

Below is a little bit of information from the City of Winnipeg website to help you Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle.

WHAT CAN I RECYCLE:

· All food and beverage containers such as jars, cans, bottles and cartons.

· Plastic containers such as bottles, tubs, pails, and jugs.

· Rigid plastic packaging

**all lids can remain on the containers and jars.

· Newspapers, flyers, mail, magazines, paper

· All cardboard boxes and cartons such as pizza boxes, cereal and laundry boxes.  Please flatten the boxes.

· Cardboard egg cartons and paper tubes

· Shredded paper can be placed in a clear plastic bag (this is the only exception to the no plastic bag rule.)

If any other recyclables are put in a plastic bag they will be automatically thrown out and sent to the landfill.

ITEMS THAT CAN NOT BE RECYCLED:

· Gift wrap

· Plastic bags, cellophane

· Plastics that are not a container such as laundry baskets, toys, plastic cutlery

· Disposable coffee cups

· Aluminum foil, foil plates, foil pie plates, and foil food containers

· Foam cups, food containers, egg cartons, and meat trays

· Foam packing materials

· Mirrors, window glass, broken glass

· Light bulbs, drinking glasses, ceramics, and cookware

· Steel pots and pans, or any scrap metal

WHAT TO DO WITH PLASTIC BAGS:  There are a few places that will recycle plastic bags for you.  Most grocery stores have a bin in the front entrance where you can place them.  However, if you would like to do a good deed and recycle at the same time, there are several places that can use clean plastic bags.  The Winnipeg Humane Society will gladly accept bags and use them for waste disposal.

WHY CAN I NOT RECYCLE CERTAIN ITEMS:  Many items on the DO NOT recycle list are there because of added materials.  Gift wrap has wax added to the paper, foil trays are made up of several different metals which reduce the quality of aluminum, and frozen juice containers have wax added to them.  Foam containers or any of the above mentioned foam products can not be recycled as there is no local vendor to do so.
